A Supernatural Thriller
The Echoes
of Sin
Jack Steen · Supernatural Fiction
The unforgivable sin. An ex-minister. A created savior. The war between heaven and hell has begun…
About the Book
With a past shrouded in secrets and a future hidden in lies, a supernatural force awakes within the small town of Redemption that threatens to undo even creation itself.
Once a minister, now a man lost in his faith, the last thing Nathan Hanlin wants is to be embroiled in a supernatural war that has nothing to do with him. Or does it?
Being called the Protector of the human race is too unreal, and finding out he's half-angel/demon only makes things more insane. So when his whole world collapses, Nathan does the only thing he can do… he runs.
Except, there are supernatural beings on his trail, so there's nowhere he can hide — especially in a town like Redemption, which no longer feels like home for him.
Redemption used to be a sleepy town with one stop sign and one diner. Now it's the centre of a war between the Guardians and the Protectors. At its core is Nathan, and he's tasked with undoing a mistake someone else made before time began. Can he?
A Note from Jack
We're calling this a Jack Original for one simple reason: I wrote this long before the Asylum Confessions became a thing. Yes, it's different. No, it's not a confession book.
Yes, it has a supernatural element to it — but if you like angel/demon/nephilim/creepy type books, you'll probably enjoy this one.
Enjoy the read!

The Echoes of Sin
Prologue · Chapter One
He stood motionless in the cold, sparse room, visions of what was to come played out in his mind.
It was perfect.
Fresh rat droppings, along with the stench of mold, urine, and sulphur, filled the air. The aroma aroused him. He rubbed his hands together as he viewed this small piece of paradise. The scorched cement blocks were a nice addition. The fingers of long-ago flames licked the walls and left burn patterns snaking toward the ceiling. The little cracks in the floor crisscrossed each other until the kaleidoscope of weeds peeping through the cracks decorated the floor.
Chains anchored to the walls promised torturous delight. Exactly what his guest deserved. Saliva pooled and dripped from his lips as he imagined the hell he was about to create for her.
It was all for her.
Innocent. Humble. A gift. For him.
It was time to say goodbye.
Nathan laid his hand on the frigid tombstone and closed his eyes. The usual platitudes of prayer wouldn't be welcomed. Not today. Not from him. She deserved more, even in death.
He'd known this day was coming, that he would need to step away from everything that held him back. The man he used to be was no more. It was time to stop pretending there was even a glimmer of hope left.
"I'm sorry Sue." The grief of the loss threatened to bury him. "I tried."
Sue Hanlin. Loved beyond time. Taken too soon.
Nathan traced the words on the tombstone before he rose and dusted grass off his jeans. The moon cast an eerie glow throughout the cemetery, illuminating the tombstones around him. The silhouette of a bird perched atop an old stone cross was soon covered by mist as it rolled in off the lake.
During the day, the cemetery was a serene setting sitting on the shore of Redemption Lake. But now, this time of night, nothing was peaceful about the atmosphere. He shivered as a cool breeze whisked around him.
"Once upon a time was never enough. Not for us. Not for our love." Nathan looked one last time at the tombstone before turning away.
Once upon a time was meant for fairy tales, where true love conquered evil with a single kiss and a worthy prince slayed the dragon.
Once upon a time, Nathan had been that prince.
Now, he was the dragon.
